JD Vance, former President Donald Trump’s running mate, expressed his willingness to engage in a vice presidential debate with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
During an interview on Aug. 11, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) stated that he is open to debating Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the presumptive Democratic vice presidential nominee.
Vance emphasized the importance of debates as a way to connect with the American people and present his case for the vice presidency. He highlighted the differences in approach between the Trump–Vance ticket and their opposition, emphasizing their belief in engaging with the media, answering questions, and participating in debates.
Prior to this statement, Vance had indicated that he would not commit to a debate until Walz was officially declared the vice presidential nominee.
Looking ahead, Vance and Walz may engage in a debate if Walz is formally nominated during the upcoming Democratic National Convention. However, specific details about the debate schedule have not been confirmed yet.
Historically, presidential and vice presidential nominees from major parties have participated in debates in September and October. Trump and Harris have agreed to one debate hosted by ABC on Sept. 10, while two other proposed debates, including one on Sept. 4 hosted by Fox, are still under discussion.
If Walz becomes the official Democratic vice presidential nominee, a debate between Vance and Walz is likely to take place around the same time as the presidential debates. Vance has criticized Harris for not engaging in media interviews since becoming the Democratic nominee.
