During a rally in western Michigan on Aug. 27, Vice Presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) criticized a controversial proposal to use U.S. tax dollars to subsidize the construction of a Chinese-owned manufacturing plant in the region. Vance, addressing a crowd of about 1,000 attendees, warned that the plan supported by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) posed a threat to national security.
Vance highlighted concerns about the plant’s potential impact on national security, citing warnings from past members of the Obama administration. MEDC, a public-private partnership agency focused on job creation through private investment and tax incentives, has been supporting the project.
Various speakers at the rally expressed worries about the economic and security implications of the plan. Lori Brock, the rally host, mentioned discrepancies in promised wages by Gotion, with initial estimates far exceeding the final wage offer. Pete Hoekstra, chair of the Michigan Republican Party, expressed confidence in the opposition’s ability to halt the project, while Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers emphasized the importance of pushing back against Chinese interests.
One concerned attendee, local farmer Tom Carson, raised issues about the project’s potential impact on farmland in the area. Environmental and job loss concerns were also voiced by others at the rally.
