A vigilant bystander threw a brick at a Mercedes to prevent a teenager from escaping after a crash that resulted in serious injuries to a man on Long Island this week, according to police.
Marianne Mkrtchian, 18, was driving a 2023 Mercedes Benz C30 on Skidmore Road near Lloyd Avenue in North Babylon around 6 p.m. on Tuesday when she crashed into a utility pole, causing it to break and fall, Suffolk County Police reported.Â
When a 54-year-old man who was in a parked car nearby got out to check on Mkrtchian’s well-being, the reckless driver put her car in reverse, backed up, and hit him – trapping him against his vehicle, authorities said.
Mkrtchian then put her car in drive and attempted to flee, as per police reports.Â
At that moment, a witness to the chaos picked up a brick and threw it at the Mercedes, breaking the windshield, law enforcement stated.Â
The impact halted the escaping teenage driver, leading her to exit the vehicle, police confirmed.
Responding patrol officers arrived and arrested her, according to police.Â
Mkrtchian, a resident of North Bellmore, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious physical injury, authorities reported.
She will face arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
The victim, from North Babylon, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for treatment, police mentioned.
The individual who threw the brick was not charged by Suffolk County Police, authorities added.
