The term we stan has become a popular slang phrase among Gen Z and Millennial individuals, signifying strong agreement or approval of something (e.g. we stan this band). Its origins can be traced back to a 2000 hip-hop song by Eminem titled Stan, which tells the story of an overly obsessive fan named Stan. The term was later used by rapper Nas in a 2001 diss track, where it was used to mean “phony” or “fake”. Initially, the term had a negative connotation and was associated with excessive behavior, but over time it evolved into a more positive light. It was first documented on Urban Dictionary in 2006, used as a verb in 2008, and has been steadily increasing in usage according to Google Trends. The plural form of the term emerged to indicate widespread support for a particular viewpoint.
