The federal Liberals are facing another popularity test as British Columbians prepare to vote in a Dec. 16 byelection. This election will gauge how the party is resonating with voters amidst its recent policy initiatives and international challenges.
The seat became vacant when Liberal MP John Aldag resigned to run for the B.C. NDP in the October election, where he was defeated by the B.C. Conservatives by over 20 percentage points.
Since the announcement of the byelection in the Cloverdale-Langley City riding in November, the Liberal government has introduced its two-month GST tax holiday. This initiative is now in the final stages of approval in the Senate. The Liberals’ plan to provide $250 cheques to working Canadians was not supported by the NDP, who argued that it would not benefit non-working individuals like seniors.
Additionally, Ottawa is currently dealing with the re-election of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canada if border security is not strengthened. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces scrutiny on how to manage relations with Trump to prevent potential detrimental impacts on the Canadian economy through new tariffs with its largest trading partner.
While polls do not guarantee outcomes, one certainty is that the labor dispute at Canada Post is affecting the organization of the byelection.
Who Is Running
The Cloverdale-Langley City riding is not considered a safe Liberal seat, unlike other ridings such as Toronto-St.Paul’s and Lasalle-Émard-Verdun, which the Liberals lost in earlier byelections this year. The Cloverdale-Langley City riding has seen alternating victories between the Liberals and Tories in recent elections.
The Conservative candidate is Tamara Jansen, an agricultural business owner who previously represented the riding in the House of Commons from 2019 to 2021. She lost to Aldag by 1,654 votes in 2021, with a margin of 3.1 percent.
Other candidates in the byelection include Madison Fleischer for the Liberal Party and Vanessa Sharma for the NDP.
Advance voting concluded on Dec. 9, and election day voting is scheduled for Dec. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. local time.
