Considering the treatment of citizens by non-Israeli governments in the Middle East, it is doubtful that the Palestinian people, especially women, would experience true freedom.
Commentary
A protestor recently approached me, shouting “Free Palestine,” and handed me a leaflet featuring Dutch-Palestinian supermodel Bella Hadid.
Bella Hadid has been a strong advocate for Palestine and against Israel, using her platform as a prominent figure in the fashion industry.
While I wish Ms. Hadid and all Palestinians the best in their pursuit of freedom, I question whether true freedom would be achieved for the Palestinian people, particularly if the “River to the Sea” plan were to be realized and Jewish people were once again expelled from the Holy Land.
Given the oppressive nature of non-Israeli governments in the Middle East, I have doubts that the Palestinian people, especially women, would truly experience freedom.
Under the rule of Hamas, political freedoms are limited for both men and women in Gaza, where a dictatorship has been in place since 2007. Similarly, Palestinians in the West Bank are governed by a dictatorship, with President Mahmoud Abbas extending his term beyond the intended duration.
Reflecting on my experiences in Israel, where diverse communities coexist under the protection of democratic freedoms, I am reminded that true freedom can only be achieved in a society that upholds individual rights and liberties.
Therefore, instead of calling for “Free Palestine,” the focus should be on advocating for the freedom and empowerment of Palestinians under a system that respects their rights and ensures equality for all.
