The U.S. intelligence chief had previously issued a warning about Iran’s increasingly aggressive influence efforts. The White House has accused Iran of funding and promoting some pro-Palestinian protests in the United States. John Kirby, a spokesperson for the National Security Council, stated during a press briefing that Iran is involved in funding and encouraging certain protest activities in the country. This statement aligns with recent remarks made by U.S. Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, although Kirby emphasized that not all protests are influenced by Iran.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized American protesters for supporting Iran during his address to the U.S. Congress. Demonstrators gathered around the U.S. Capitol, replacing American flags with Palestinian flags and setting U.S. flags on fire near Union Station.
Vice President Kamala Harris condemned the protestors for their actions at Union Station, calling them unpatriotic and denouncing the burning of the American flag. Avril Haines had previously warned about Iran’s attempts to incite protests in the U.S. in support of Hamas, noting that Iran is becoming increasingly aggressive in its efforts to undermine democratic institutions.
President Joe Biden met with Netanyahu to discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict and the ongoing negotiations for a cease-fire in Gaza. They also discussed the release of American hostages held by Hamas. Biden emphasized the need to finalize the peace deal as soon as possible. Harris also met with Netanyahu on the same day, with her meeting taking on added significance as she emerged as a likely Democratic presidential nominee following Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race.
