The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has condemned a surveillance video showing Sean “Diddy” Combs assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, but they are unable to file charges due to the statute of limitations. The office explained in a statement released on Instagram that they cannot prosecute the incident, which allegedly took place in 2016, as it falls outside the timeline for charging assault crimes in California.
Legal experts state that the statute of limitations for misdemeanor assault in California is one year, and three years for felony assault. Since the altercation between Ventura and Combs occurred eight years ago, it is beyond the allowable timeline for prosecution.
Despite the lack of criminal charges, Ventura filed a civil lawsuit against Combs in November 2023, accusing him of rape, physical assault, and other disturbing behavior. The case was quickly settled within a day, with Combs denying the allegations.
Ventura’s lawyer, Douglas H. Wigdor, expressed that the released surveillance footage further confirms Combs’ predatory behavior. He commended Ventura for her courage in coming forward with her story.
Several individuals in Hollywood, including 50 Cent and Aubrey O’Day, have criticized Combs for his actions. Fans have taken to social media to demand justice for Ventura and condemn Combs for his behavior.
Ventura’s husband, Alex Fine, released a statement condemning violence against women and those who protect abusers. Combs has not addressed the video or the backlash he has received.
