Wong Expresses Concern With Impending Sentencing of Australian Citizen by Hong Kong Court

The Australian minister has responded to the situation in Beijing-controlled Hong Kong by expressing concern over the sentencing of Australian citizen Gordon Ng by a Hong Kong court. Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that this is a challenging time for Mr. Ng, his family, and supporters, and that the government is advocating for his welfare and seeking consular access. Ng, along with other members of the group NSL47, was arrested for organizing and participating in an election primary in January 2021 and was later convicted under the National Security Law on May 30, 2024. Australia has objected to the broad application of national security legislation to its citizens and has called on Beijing to respect human rights recommendations. The U.S. has criticized the trial as politically motivated, while Hong Kong authorities maintain that the legal process was impartial. Human rights groups have urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to advocate for Ng’s release during his visit to China. Ng, who faces a maximum life sentence, is expected to appear in court before the end of the year. Australia Hong Kong Link condemned the sentencing and called for Ng’s release, stating that participating in a lawful democratic process does not make individuals criminals. The organization urged the Australian government to negotiate with Chinese and Hong Kong authorities to secure Ng’s release so he can reunite with his family in Australia.
