Several supermarkets in the United States, such as Aldi and Hy-Vee, have issued recalls for various cream cheese products due to potential salmonella contamination. Customers are advised to discard the affected items immediately.
Aldi, a German discount supermarket chain, announced the recall on May 9 as a precautionary measure. The affected products were manufactured by Schreiber Foods, Inc., based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- Whipped cream cheese spread with UPC code 4099100101881, and sell by dates of 08/30/2024, 08/31/2024, 09/01/2024, 09/03/2024, and 09/04/2024;
- Chive & Onion cream cheese spread with UPC code 4099100101751 and sell by dates of 09/13/2024 and 09/22/2024;
- Cream cheese spread with UPC code 4099100101737 and sell by dates of 09/01/2024, 09/08/2024, and 09/15/2024;
- Strawberry cream cheese spread with UPC code 4099100101744 and sell by dates of 09/08/2024 and 09/15/2024.
The recalled items were sold at Aldi stores in 28 states and the District of Columbia.
Aldi has urged customers to dispose of the affected products due to potential salmonella contamination. The supermarket chain did not report any illnesses related to the recalled cream cheese products or specify when the contamination was detected.
Customers who have purchased the affected products are encouraged to return them to their local store for a full refund, according to Aldi.
Hy-Vee, a grocery store based in Des Moines, Iowa, also issued a voluntary recall for two varieties of its Hy-Vee Cream Cheese Spread and bulk-packaged Cookies & Cream Mix for potential salmonella contamination.
These items were distributed to various locations in the Midwest under different branding programs.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that salmonella causes millions of illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths in the United States each year.
